People can even forget what you did but not how that made them feel.

I will never forget, how in her quiet way, my midwife inspired my confidence during my first birth.

She, of course had no reason to feel confident in me, she just trusted birth and trusted me, more than I trusted myself.

I guess I ‘caught’ trust and confidence off her.

I am forever grateful and I will never forget her or those feelings.

Our memories are intrinsically linked biologically to our feelings.

Quite literally, in the form of neural pathways running from our hippocampus (short term memory store) to our amygdala (emotion processing centre of the brain).

Feeling good, especially when it comes to birthing parents, starts with feelings safe.

How do we help parents to feel safe?

It starts with us, as birth attendants feeling safe ourselves, and depending on birth place, this can sometimes be tricky.

I am fascinated by the way that feelings are catching.

We are social animals and always in rapport, always sensing what those nearby to us are feeling in order to quickly learn how to respond, whether to match their feeling or respond accordingly.

Confidence (and lack of it) can spread like a wild fire in the birthing room and fear, unfortunately, is never far away.

Managing our own feelings and energy around others is a conscious and practiced skill and an important tool in any carers box of mindfulness.

That is why I am delighted that there is a whole module devoted to this subject in the new TBR Doula Training, there is also a live study day given to practicing these skills too.

What is a doula worth? Conversations about caring

What is a doula worth?

Conversations about caring roles, value and money are often contentious.

Many believe caring should be accessible for everyone and therefore free at the point of entry.

It was a guiding principle that the NHS was founded on but after years of chronic underfunding many would argue that care can not be free after all.

Someone has to pay for it and even if that reasonably means paying more taxes, it would appear that is something the majority of British electorate is unwilling to do, judging by the results of our past elections 🤨.

When it comes to independent perinatal doula support the demand is set to increase by 6% in the next year according market analysts.* The same experts expect the doula market to double in the next 10 years.

A while ago a well-known doula posted on Instagram ‘how much should a new doula charge?’ and I wasn’t surprised to see how much strong feeling and judgement the post attracted.

One doula who had been working in the South East for well over a decade was openly critical of new doulas charging over £2,000 for their services. She said that the reason she was able to be a doula was because her family did not depend on her wage, fortunately her husband had a very well paid job, she explained.

Her view activated A LOT of judgement from me. Should only upper middle-class women be doulas? I thought angrily.

Why do we get so heated about the topic of charging for care?

Why do we undervalue it so often?

Why do we judge others for charging what they need to live?

Is it because, technically, we think caring is a human attribute that anyone can provide?

Therefore, it’s low value?

In 20 year’s time many jobs will be handled by AI (artificial intelligence) and I do suspect that many caring roles will be delivered by AI robots.

I also think AI care will be quite an unsatisfactory experience for those on the receiving end, especially during birth.

Birth and postnatal support is emotionally heavy lifting work and in my opinion priceless.

4 Reasons the world needs more doulas right now.

💛 Traditional, woman centred midwifery, that supports parents birth choices and prioritises women’s long term health continues to be undermined and eroded across the Western world. What remains is an obstetric nursing model that often leaves parents wanting additional support navigating an increasingly medical maternity system. Doulas do not replace midwives. But the shortage of woman centred midwifery care has left parents seeking compassionate care and support elsewhere with doulas.

🧡 The demand for doulas continues to grow year on year. According to Doula UK demand for birth doulas grew by 25.7% between 2020 and 2021. Demand for postnatal support doulas was even greater at with an increase of 110% for the same years.

❤️ The way parents birth their babies and are cared for afterwards has a huge impact on their emotional and mental health afterwards; sometimes for a very long time. We never forget our births and those who were there to support us as we found our way through pregnancy, birth and beyond. Being a doula is one of the most meaningful services provided to society.

💜 A recent scoping review of 16 different studies into doulas found that they had an overwhelmingly positive impact on parents experience of birth. Collectively these studies reported that parents supported by doulas resulted in; reduced incidence of C-section, reduced incidence of preterm birth, reduced incidence of low birth weight babies, reduced epidural use and medical pain management, reduced length of labour, reduced incidence of induction, reduced infant mortality rates, reduced rates of anxiety, depression, and postpartum PTSD, improved mental health status, improved breastfeeding success.
